I am participating in the group exhibition
"THOSE WHO DREAM BY DAY"
A visual journey inspired by Edgar Allan Poe

Vernissage: 15th of March 2013 at Strychnin Gallery / Berlin

Strychnin Gallery photo Screenshot2013-03-01at185240_zps61d227b8.png

Those who dream by day”, opening doors on the 15th of March at Strychnin Gallery, celebrates the imagination and oeuvres of the great Edgar Allan Poe.

The mysterious man, whose life was short and filled with tragedy, left behind one of the most admired, questioned and influential literary body of works.

While alive, his writings were ostracized and put under heavy scrutiny; many denied reading his publications. However, the public did yet not realize that Poe was profoundly ahead of his time. A pioneer of the gothic, macabre and thriller genre, he paved way for many detective-story authors to come.

Poe’s popularity soared after his seemingly suicidal death on the 3rd of October, 1849, especially through French avant-garde writers and artists in the late 19th century. Finally, many came to understand and appreciate the psychological depth he sought to convey through his emphasis and curiosity of the dark, imaginative and “strange”. Multitudes were not only intrigued by his ingenious mind, but desired to understand his source of inspirations and meaning of his work.

Thus, over the course of time, more and more distinguished artists have hoped to be associated with and emulate his writings through the visual medium.

Strychnin Gallery wants to re-establish this admiration for Poe and thus was “Those Who Dream by Day” born. A handful of international artists were gathered and given a short story by Poe to take inspiration from. The pieces displayed will transcend only the personal connection and interpretation that each artist has to their given story. Making the gallery walls into a visual library of Edgar Allan Poe’s legacy.

The artists involved will be; David Hochbaum, Kathryn Carr, Daniel Van Nes, Luisa Catucci, Bethany Marchman, Eliza Bolli, Joey Remmers, Yann Gobart, Akiza, Virginia Mori, Loredana Catania, Saturno Butto, Hara Katsiki, Danny van Ryswyk, Ufocinque, Lola, Leila Ataya, Robert Tirado, Nom Kinnear King, Nick Sheehy, Mandy Tsung, Saiko Kato and many more.

BERLIN WHAT? _ 100 contemporary artists

This is a sneak preview of the art book BERLIN WHAT? where my work is published.
Curated by Neonchocolate Gallery / Berlin

About the project:
An interactive art book feat. about 100 Berlin-based artists presenting urban art, painting, illustration, collages and photography.

THE IDEA
During the course of some 100 exhibitions held in the Neonchocolate Gallery in the last two years, we have always held a desire to present Berlin’s wide spectrum of young art and its burgeoning art scene to an audience outside the capital. Now, with the project “Berlin What?”, we aim to showcase Berlin-based artists internationally via exhibitions, extraordinary art events and, as our first step, an interactive artbook of the same name that we are publishing on ourselves.

A review of my work from Italian art curator and journalist Giovanni Cervi in his blog WOODENLEG

Hara was born in Greece and lives in Berlin. She moves on different platforms never losing her original style made of pale gray and pure white mixed with ghost black. Her pararrel “mondo” is populated by innocent creepy creatures, old images magically turned alive by gif animations and actual by a strong vision of contemporary global discomfort. Most of her alien human beings seem at ease and comfortable in her universe, can we declare the same thing? Check more and more of Hara’s amazing artworks here and more of her eCollage serie after the cut.

" Hara Katsiki is an artist who was born in Greece and currently resides in Berlin. She says creating art is who she is, “like energy coming through the earth up into a tree”, and by scrolling through her wide variety of work, I can see exactly what she means.
Katsiki is so well rounded that she creates everything from drawing, painting, graphic design, animation, costume design and music. I love the mixture of image manipulation with hand-drawn illustration throughout her collages. The first image of the black and white photo layered with a washed out skeleton is by far my favourite and I’d love to know Katsiki’s inspiration behind the piece.
The sculpture in the last image is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Inspired by treasures of the deep sea, the use of crystals mixed with rusty gold works so well. Katsiki has also created a range of moving image projects that you can view on her website. "

Berlin-based Greek artist Hara Katsiki is multi-facetted. She is an award-winning art director and visual artist who delves into illustration, painting, graphic design, animation, costume design and music. Her affinity to ornamental patterns are present throughout her entire reals of art work. Looking at her work is like being in a state of subconsciousness- Hara mixes the world of realism and fairytales:

“I’m like a medium. I allow my hand to move randomly, expressing the subconscious so that the final result may reveal something of the psyche. I do not always look to tell a story or create meaning.
Sometimes by looking deeper you can find your own.”

2010 she garnered recognition with the Swatch Young Illustrator’s Award for her film “Opium”. Ink drops were filmed, colours edited, effects mirrored and looped to imitate smoke entering the human body.

The work of multi-talented Hara Katsiki covers a whole range of creative disciplines, but it’s her delicate line drawings that really caught my eye. In particular, her gold on black Garden of Eden piece, which makes me feel nostalgic for the foil scratch art I used to do as a kid.

GROSSARTIG 1

GROSSARTIG 2

GROSSARTIG is a quarterly magazine for photography, illustration and design. It is unwieldy, bulky and huge because we want to consciously set a counterpoint to the 72dpi-world of the internet. It is adressed to visually- oriented creative people and invites them - very traditionally - to experience the power of a printed image directly
With calm, leisue, passion for details, and an analog slowness.
At the same time, the Grossartig website shows only playful, artistic videos in connection with the magazine.

THE AVANT/GARD DIARIES

My work is feautured in THE AVANT/GARD DIARIES, a project that documents personal views on the avant-garde.Rather than labeling people avant-garde, they try to see through the eyes of people, who they admire for what they do and they consider to be ahead of time. The result is a compendium of various, very personal perspectives that disclose new ways of thinking and spread inspiration.
